How to Measure Pillows

If you already have a pillow that you would like to update with a new Hackner Home pillow cover, you may realize it is difficult to measure something three-dimensional like a pillow. This article will teach you how to measure your pillow so that you purchase the correct size pillow cover. (Be sure to also use our Pillow Fit Guide to choose the correct pillow cover size for your desired look.)

STEP 1: FIND A FLEXIBLE RULER OR MEASURING TAPE.

Flexible measuring tape for measuring decorative pillows

Since a pillow is rounded and three-dimensional, you need a ruler that will bend with the curves of the pillow. We recommend a flexible measuring tape rather than a retractable tape measure. A retractable tape measure can be more difficult to hold in place while measuring your pillow. We recommend asking someone to help you measure if needed.

STEP 2: FIND THE CORRECT DIRECTION FOR THE PILLOW.

Pillows have a top and a bottom. You might not notice the difference when styling a pillow on your sofa or bed, but the orientation is important when determining the correct size.

Begin by finding the bottom of the pillow. The bottom typically contains the pillow cover closure, such as a zipper or buttons. Other pillows may be sewn closed, in which case the bottom may be identified by a seam or overlap.

Once you find the bottom, you also know which side is the top. Hackner Home pillow covers are sized by height and width. The first measurement is the height, or distance from top to bottom. The second measurement is the width, or distance from left to right.

STEP 3: MEASURE THE HEIGHT.

Hold the measuring tape along the seam of the pillow. Make sure the zero mark on the measuring tape lines up with the seam. Pillows and pillow covers should be measured seam to seam. Begin by measuring the height, or top-to-bottom measurement. This is the first number in the pillow cover dimensions.

The height of the pillow is the number that lines up with the opposite seam. If the measurement is slightly off, round to the nearest whole number. Write the measurement down before continuing.

STEP 4: MEASURE THE WIDTH.

Next, measure the pillow from left to right using the same seam-to-seam method. The width is the second number in the pillow cover dimensions on HacknerHome.com. Write this measurement down with the height so you have both dimensions when selecting your new pillow cover.

STEP 5: PURCHASE YOUR NEW HACKNER HOME PILLOW COVER.

Before selecting your cover size, we recommend reviewing our Pillow Fit Guide to help determine the best fit for your desired look.
